What to Note When Importing Pomelos from China

What to Note When Importing Pomelos from China

Timeline: Why Mid-September Is the “Red Line”In mid-September, Sanhong pomelos ripen first. Pinghe Sanhong (red peel, red albedo, red flesh) is a favorite among high-end European supermarkets, but supply is limited.Chinese suppliers usually start sending “first-batch samples” around September 10. As an importer, I must decide immediately: should I take this batch of samples? If the sample Brix is not high enough, supermarkets may reject the full container after arrival. From late September to October, red-flesh and white-flesh pomelos are harvested in bulk. This is the real bulk season. White-flesh offers the best value, and red-flesh has the broadest acceptance. If I only focus on Sanhong, I will miss the best buying window for white-flesh—because the white-flesh picking period is relatively short, and early harvesting makes it sour.We cannot visit Pinghe orchards in person, so we can only rely on suppliers’ “maturity reports.” If a supplier picks early to grab early-season orders, the acidity of first-batch white-flesh will ruin our customer relationships in Europe. Therefore, in the first week of September, I require suppliers to provide Brix test records and peel color standards, and clearly write in the contract: “If Brix on arrival is below 10°, the full container will be discounted or returned.”Taste and Appearance: Not “Is It Tasty,” but “Does It Fit My Channel”

Will consumers repurchase? Can shelf life last two weeks? Can the packaging go directly on the shelf?

White-flesh pomelo taste details: light sweet and slightly sour, juicy, thin peel. European consumers like this “classic pomelo taste,” but if first-batch fruit is picked early, it will be sour—this is the biggest risk in September. Single fruit weight 800g–1200g, smooth peel without scars, no green shoulders.Red-flesh pomelo taste details: sweeter, pink/purple-red flesh, high in lycopene.Europeans are now pursuing “superfoods,” and the color of red-flesh pomelo is eye-catching on shelves. Uniform color, no browning, Brix ≥11°.Sanhong pomelo taste details: red blush on peel, red albedo, deep red flesh, Brix about 11–13° (varies by year). This is a “visual” product, suitable for gift boxes. Appearance must be perfect, color saturated, no defects.First lock in samples of Sanhong and red-flesh to let European supermarket buying directors “taste.” For white-flesh, place bulk orders directly, because it has the best value and, if maturity is well controlled, the lowest risk.

Price Trends: Don’t Be Fooled by Chinese Farm-Gate Prices

RMB 2–3 per jin (about USD 0.28–0.42 per kg) is only the orchard gate price. To export to Europe, I need to add: grading (by size, color, Brix), packaging (EU-standard cartons, pallets), testing (SGS full-panel EU MRL pesticide residue report, which can cost over a thousand euros each time), cold chain (pre-cooling + reefer container to Rotterdam, sea freight + insurance),certifications (GlobalG.A.P., BRC), and import tariffs and customs clearance fees.Because of its appearance premium, Sanhong’s export FOB price may be 30%–50% higher than white-flesh. But high-end European supermarkets are willing to pay for the visual impact of Sanhong, so my profit margin may actually be larger.China’s domestic retail price of RMB 4–6 per jin is for tourists and the gift market. European supermarket retail prices are usually 2–3 times the purchase price. If I calculate my cost based on Chinese retail prices, it will be completely distorted. If the supplier only quotes FOB, I will ask: “What is my total cost after arrival in Rotterdam?” Only then can I compare the total account with Spanish pomelos and South African grapefruit.

In September, European importers must obtain from suppliers:

EU MRL full-panel report (for pomelos, not a general report)Phytosanitary Certificate draft, confirming it includes EU-specific additional declarations (such as fruit fly, black spot)GlobalG.A.P. certificate (farm scope, confirming pomelos are included)

Watch the Weather, Adjust Flexibly

In 2026, Fujian has had more rain than usual. What does this mean? The Pinghe pomelo harvest may be delayed, and large fruit is prone to bottom cracking and low Brix. As an importer, I will ask suppliers for orchard weather reports and harvest plans by mid-September. If rain causes quality risks, I will decisively postpone orders to late September–October, even if it means missing the “earliest to market” marketing gimmick. Because European supermarkets value stable quality more than being “first on the shelf but too sour to eat.”
